What we do
Independent App Reviews, founded in 2019, publishes methodology-first reviews of consumer apps across seven categories: calorie and nutrition tracking, fitness and training, health and wearables, productivity, finance, AI tools, and wellness and mental health.
"Methodology-first" has a specific meaning for us. Where an app makes a measurable claim — accuracy, adherence, time-to-log — we test it against a reference rather than restating the marketing number. Every quantitative claim on this site links back to a re-runnable dataset, and no point estimate ships without a confidence interval. Our full protocol is on the methodology page.
What we don't do
We do not run affiliate links, including hidden ones. We do not accept sponsorship from app developers or platforms. We have no vendor relationships. We pay for our own subscriptions and acquire apps the way a reader does — at retail price, through our own accounts.
We do not publish AI-generated articles as editorial. Every byline corresponds to a real author with disclosed credentials and a disclosed beat. You can read their full profiles on our team page.

The team
Our masthead is small and credentialed. Rankings are written by our editorial reviewers; clinical and statistical claims are verified separately, which keeps the verification independent of the recommendation.

Editorial corrections
When we make a factual mistake, we correct it inline and add a dated correction note at the bottom of the article. When the correction materially changes our recommendation, we say so at the top.
Apps change quickly. When an app changes meaningfully after we publish — a pricing change, a new paywall, a model update that shifts accuracy — we update the review and bump the "last updated" date. We never silently revise.
